post-operative recovery
Recovering from a surgical procedure, such as a hip or knee replacement is undoubtedly a challenge and often a very painful one. The natural reaction can be to do as little as possible and especially avoid activities that might be painful. Contrary to popular belief, protracted bouts of rest with your feet up on the sofa are likely to be counter-productive and extend the recovery period. Key to recovery is getting you moving! By improving your strength and range of movement, pain will naturally reduce and your recovery time will be shortened.
Where mobility is severely restricted, it may be necessary to provide some form of mobility aid, such as a walker or crutch to get you back on your feet. We can loan these to you where necessary and instruct you how to use these safely.
The role of exercise in recovery
To help facilitate recovery, physiotherapists will often prescribe specific rehabilitation exercises, which will help to improve posture, strengthen weak muscles and improve flexibility to stiff joints. Exercise may include stretching, balance work, resistance exercises or exercises using equipment, such as a gym ball. Any equipment needed will be provided free of charge (subject to a small deposit).
Rehabilitation exercises are a fundamental part of physiotherapy practice. Experience has shown that patients who are committed to their exercise programmes are likely to respond to treatment more quickly and have better outcomes than those who are not.
Getting you back to full function is obviously a key objective. However, we also want to ensure that you stay that way. Again, exercise can play an important role. Your physiotherapist may recommend a course of exercises to help maintain optimum physical performance and to reduce the chances of the problem returning.
Hip and Knee Replacement Rehab Classes
Having seen many people recovering from hip and knee replacement surgery, it became apparent to us that there was a general lack of support provided to patients following their initial post-operative rehab and we felt that this was unnecessarily extending recovery times.
We therefore developed a dedicated rehab class for post-surgical patients, providing low cost one-on-one advice and treatment in a fun, class-based setting. During the class you will be assessed and given specific exercises and advice, tailored to your individual needs, with the aim of increasing your strength, improving your mobility and helping to relieve any pain and stiffness associated with your surgery. As well as getting expert advice from specialists in their field, you can also share experiences with other people who are going through the same things as you.
If you are interested in learning more about our post-surgical rehab classes with a view to joining, then please call the clinic and ask to speak to Jenny Manners.
