"I am fortunate to love my job, being a physiotherapist allows me to assess what may be causing people pain and discomfort, use a variety of techniques to address the problem and ultimately aim to discharge them from my care symptom free. Physiotherapy is about restoring normal function which involves assessing all of the body's systems. There are people who are in daily discomfort because of back or neck conditions or joint problems, who can have their symptoms alleviated if not totally resolved by visiting a physiotherapist."

Bhanu Ramaswamy MCSP - Independent Physiotherapy Consultant and specialist in working with older people and neurological conditions.
HPC Reg. No. PH39451
I am a physiotherapist with over 20 years of experience who has specialised in working with older people. In my last NHS appointment, I was the consultant on a rehabilitation ward, accepting people who were medically well but not yet fit enough to return home safely; I led a team of multi-professional staff to maximise the potential of those admitted to the ward. We accepted people with any condition, whether they had fallen and lost confidence to move, had just undergone surgery and were in pain, so not yet mobile to return home, or had been admitted with an illness that had reduced their fitness; I developed wide experience in assessing and managing a range of conditions affecting older people. For this role, I undertook advanced training in First Contact and also in prescribing. These qualifications have added to my physiotherapy expertise, and enabled me to recognise and understand common medical problems and the medicines people are prescribed, and how they affect physical health and ability. I also have additional qualifications to practice acupuncture and a qualification in Fitness Instructing if you attend a gym.
I maintain membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and belong to their older people and their neurology clinical interest groups, often representing my professional body on Department of Health projects. For anyone who is a member of Parkinson’s UK, you may recognise my name from involvement with the branch committee and exercise programmes run in Sheffield.
